Elon Musk’s high-speed Hyperloop transport system to soon head underwater

Elon Musk's Hyperloop Transport System To Soon Head Underwater-1

Ever since SpaceX CEO Elon Musk made the incredibly futuristic concept known to the world in 2013, there has been a lot of buzz surrounding Hyperloop. Just last month, Hyperloop One (previously named Hyperloop Technologies) conducted the first successful test of the high-speed transportation system. According to CTO Brogan BamBrogan, however, the company is already gearing up to build the world’s first underwater Hyperloop transport system. He was reported saying:

The DNA of my time at SpaceX has got its fingerprints all over Hyperloop. There’s nothing new that has to be invented, but (what) we are doing is innovating and doing things to bring the cost down.

Originally conceived by Musk, the Hyperloop is envisioned as an ultra-fast transport system that uses near-vacuum tubes to carry people and cargo at over 1,220 kilometers per hour (around 758 miles per hour). The system, according to Musk, could rely on a variety of propulsion techniques, including magnetic levitation. Once fully developed, the system could cover the distance between San Francisco and Los Angeles in less than 30 minutes.

With several startups working simultaneously to turn the futuristic concept into a reality, the team at Hyperloop One has already started working on building the first underwater Hyperloop system. As BamBrogan points out, the company is currently waiting for the production process to become “cost-competitive”. The developers hope that, with further advancement, these costs will eventually come down. He added:

We think we can deliver things people don’t even know they want yet, and that’s going to manifest itself in a lot of ways. So I think we will see some above-grade systems, we’re definitely going to see tunneled systems, and we also want to see some underwater systems.
