There must have been superheroes and space-traveling entities way back during the Renaissance times of Europe. And, what’s more, it was also the period when high fashions and artistic statements were blossoming all around the continent. Well, present-day photographer Sacha Goldberger have taken all of these ebullient factors into consideration, and as a result have created the ‘Super Flemish’ series of stylized photographs that depict the portraits of famous pop-cultural characters in their Flemish painting avatars.
The whole project of pitting our favorite fictional icons against the distinguished backdrop of the 16th century was a painstaking task indeed, with the endeavor taking over 2 years to complete. And, it was not just about the recreation of the images by a single person – the Super Flemish required a whopping twelve people to dabble with the faces, hair-styles and special effects; while five dedicated costume designers made specific attires that would suit the Northern European style essence carried forth by the characters.
Of course, the primary ingredient in all of this was ‘fun’, as Goldberger makes it clear in a succinct manner –
All of it was incredible, it was like a dream come true. When you see the Hulk in front of you and you ask him to look romantic, it’s crazy. The Joker was also very impressive. He endured three hours of make-up and started to act like Heath Ledger in the movie, The Dark Knight.
