It is not often that we come across a snow bike that promises smooth ride on loose, powder snow. Developed after three years of research, the new SNOGO bike combines the best of skiing and downhill mountain biking. Unlike the typical dual-ski bikes, it features an innovative triple-blade design that in turn provides stability and comfort, while traversing a variety of terrain. What is more, the bike comes equipped with an advanced articulated steering system and powerful front suspension, for improved performance on snow.
Ski bikes have been around for the last 150 years, with some of the earlier versions built chiefly using wood and metal. Commonly-available snow bikes are usually too bulky and complicated to make for a fun ride. Often times, their hefty price tag makes such bikes less appealing than regular skis or snowboards. Designed by Salt Lake City-based innovators, Obed Marrder and Chase Wagstaff, the new SNOGO bike is very different from traditional ski-bikes. Its unique design pairs the motions of mountain-bike riding with that of skiing, thus offering snow-sports aficionados a chance to enjoy the mountains without having to worry about safety.
Measuring around 84.5 cm (or 33.26″) in height, 68.0 cm (or 26.77″) in width and nearly 169.7 cm (or 66.81″) in length, the SNOGO ski-bike is quite lightweight (around 32 lbs) and comes without a seat to rest your body on. However, it has an integrated chairlift hook that provides greater stability while riding. One of its chief features is the advanced multi-link steering technology, known as responsive lateral torsion-assist geometry (RLTAG), which in turn offers the rider maximum control over the bike’s movements. Its innovative multi-hinged design means that each of the rear skis can move separately.
Featuring strengthened wood core with full steel edges and tip protectors, the all-mountain twin-tip skis measure nearly 90 cm in the back and around 75 cm in the front. The rear skis have powerful bindings for your feet and specially-designed freeze-resistant stomp pads that offer greater traction on snow. The bike boasts a 6061 aircraft grade aluminium body, and is also made up of innovative interchangeable parts. Thanks to its unique Quick Release design, the bike can be disassembled, for storage and transportation, in less than 30 seconds.
Priced at around $1,299, the SNOGO ski bike is currently up for crowdfunding at Kickstarter.
