In addition to being utilitarian, thanks to its simple, wireless design, the new Orilamp is unique for its almost ethereal beauty. Shaped like an accordion, this origami-inspired lamp boasts several smart features, including Bluetooth connectivity that allows users to remotely control all of its aspects via specially-developed smartphone app. What is more, the lamp comes fitted with powerful LEDs that can last for a total of seven hours, on a single charge.
Designed by Toronto-based innovators, Orilamp is stretchable and foldable, and can actually be reshaped into a variety of forms, depending on the manner in which you choose to use it. It can be set on the table in a semicircle, or suspended from the ceiling like a hanging lantern. Its incredibly flexible design allows it to be used in several different ways, such as night light, table lamp, accent light, emergency light and others, both indoors and outdoors. Its soft, warm glow helps you create a cozy, romantic atmosphere right in the middle of your living room.
Built from eco-friendly, heat-resistant Nomex fiber by DuPont, the lamp possesses a natural wood cover, available in American Black Walnut and German Blonde Birch finishes. Weighing only around 340 g, Orilamp’s compact, lightweight structure means that it can be easily held in one hand or carried inside one’s pocket or bag. Tiny triangular magnets, present at both ends of the wooden cover, hold the lamp together, when shut. What is more, the light is programmed to automatically turn on/off as soon as the lamp has been opened/closed.
Each Orilamp contains LEDs that glow like 70-W bulbs at maximum brightness, but are also equipped with a dimmer option. Measuring around 4.2 x. 4.2 x 1.7 inc (approx. 107 x 107 x 45 mm), the product runs on a battery that can be charged via micro USB. With full charge taking only one hour to complete, the lamp can provide illumination for nearly seven hours, after which it has to be charged again.
To help users remotely control the lamp’s functions, the designers have developed the Smart Orilamp App, available for free on Android and iOS platforms. The lamp’s Bluetooth connectivity allows you to adjust its various functions, at the swipe of your finger. One can turn it on or off, alter LED brightness, set timer and even place a morning alarm. The app also offers information about the lamp’s battery life.
Currently up for crowdfunding at Indiegogo, the product is available for pre-order for around $79. If everything goes according to plan, the developers will commence shipping sometime in June, this year.
